Strength Emerald Tolemac
Strength is all about going for your heart’s desire, because you are grown up enough to truly know yourself. It is a gentle card, even though it roars with the heart of a lion. There is much unseen work behind strength, such as fighting inner demons and confronting the lower nature.
The number of this card is eight. Eight is an important number in Buddhism; think of the eight fold path, which leads to enlightenment. Eight is also considered the number of Inanna, the Babylonian goddess of love and war. In some decks strength is represented by Cyrene, handmaiden of Artemis or Dianna.
A goddess figure is depicted walking with a lion. In Tibet, lions are an attribute of Tara and maternal instincts. Both the woman and the lion appear very happy, calm and confident. They are friends; her hand resting on the lion’s head. This comradery shows that the questioner can possess the power of the lion, the king of beasts, without having to overpower it through sheer force. When force and spiritual aims are united Strength is the result. The part of your life that this strength shows itself in depends on what is up for you.
It is possible that getting Strength in a spread could refer to the questioner realising their artistic potential. It might be that you have a wonderful business offer coming. Whatever is on the questioner’s plate, getting Strength is an invitation to take a leap of faith. You need not be afraid that your spiritual strength will be overcome by baser desires. When you get this card you can feel secure that you are attaining integrity, self-discipline and self-knowledge. The symbols surrounding woman depicted make this richly clear.
The woman has a heart symbol on her breast, representing the triumph of love over hate. This is the wise use of will, and it requires a different kind of courage than that of mere might. The woman is wearing white, a symbol of purity. The questioner can learn much about the power of purity from this card. The red rose bushes are a symbol of love as well as Venus and passion. When joined the purity symbols and the roses show victory over passion. The woman is holding calla lilies. The lily is a flower sacred to the virgin goddess. The purity symbols underline her pure motives for exerting her strength.
The use of this kind of strength cannot be about doing harm. This does indeed mean taming baser instinct. Forgiveness is required to attain this true growth of spirit. It is obvious that the woman has mastered this skill, because she has control of the lion through kindness. She is not in struggle with it; this is strength at peace with all aspects of the beast. There is an open cage at her feet with a yellow bird outside the cage. When we make friends with the strong beast part of ourselves and can trust ourselves to let it out of the cage, we harness a mighty power indeed.
This card is ruled by the astrological sign Leo, whose attributes are love, power and loyal ambition. Leos are open minded. The blazing sun can be seen in the background, one of the life giving symbols of the sign. The moon can also be seen, ruler of the female. When they are in the sky at the same time it is significant and special, because male and female attributes rein together in harmony.
