Justice Card Traits

The Major Arcana illustrates the whole path of The Fool from naivety to enlightenment. The eleventh card of Major Arcana is called Justice, and it is ruled by the star sign Libra. The word “Libra” also refers to the Greek word for yoke, of the type used to harness oxen and horses. The astrological glyph for Libra resembles both a balance and a yoke. Criminals are yoked by the balanced application of the law, and spouses are bound or yoked together by matrimony. Scales, yokes and swords often appear in ancient art and symbols, the sword being another symbol of justice and a suit of the Minor Arcana in the tarot.

The Fool’s Journey Meets with Justice

After encountering the Wheel of Fortune and meeting his Karma, The Fool now meets with Justice. This is where he must pay his penance for any crimes previously committed, and iron out his karmic debt. He learns through Justice that no infringements go unnoticed, and that all debts must be repaid. Justice brings about the restoration of balance wherever there are imbalances. She restores the balance in what has occurred so far for The Fool on his journey towards enlightenment. Let’s take this story for example:

The Fool yearns for a new path, a new aspiration and inspiration for his life. He speaks with a man seated at the lunch table and asks where he can find some guidance. The old man sends him off to see the Oracle, but when he gets there he can hear her trying to mediate between two quarreling brothers over an inheritance. One brother has the whole inheritance, the other has nothing.

The Oracle

“I ask that all of it be given to me,” the poor brother demands, “Not only because I have a better right to it, but because I will not be wasteful with it, as he is!” But the rich brother protests, “It is rightfully mine and that’s all that should matter, not what I do with it!”

The Oracle listens, then awards half of the rich brother’s inheritance to the poor brother. The Fool thinks this only fair, but neither brother is happy. The rich one hates losing half his wealth, and the poor one feels he ought to have gotten all.

“You were fair,” the Fool remarks to the Oracle after the brothers have left. “Yes, I was,” she answers plainly. “With only half the inheritance, the rich one will stop being so wasteful. And the poor one will have as much as he needs. Even though they cannot see it, this decision was good for both.”

The Fool thinks on this and realises that he has spent his life achieving worldly ambitions and physical goods while leaving his spiritual self to starve. He ought to have given half his time and energy to his spiritual self, but he didn’t. It’s no wonder that he feels unbalanced. Thanking the woman, he heads out to restore equilibrium to his inner scales.

Justice Figure Traits

On the Justice card in all variations of the Rider Waite deck, the female sits in her chair dressed in a cloak that is red, and in her right hand she holds a sword while at the same time holding scales in her left hand. The crown that she wears on her head has a small square on it which represents the fact that she has well-ordered thoughts.

You can see the clasp that is holding the cloak together. The square that is shown is the law which protects the circle and the eternal state of oneness within us all. The sword she is holding in her hand is double-edged, which cut both ways, this signifies independence. It is showing victory. The same sword that is her right hand illustrates the rational well-ordered mindset necessary to distribute fair justice. The scale that is in her left hand shows that judgment must be balanced by intuition. The small white shoe that pops out from beneath her cloak tells us of the spiritual trials and error of our events. The purple cloth that is seen behind her signifies compassion and the grey pillars shows the constraints of the physical world.

Fairness

Justice operates in the most unprejudiced and realistic fashion as can be done. What this means is that it includes how you think about what you do and how you treat yourself. The Justice card states that the fairest decision will be made. If the card falls in reference to yourself or the querent, it means that once you (or he or she) believes in themselves and stop being unjust with yourself, all things will be possible.

Even though you may have to account for your actions the situation will balance itself out accordingly. The Justice’s scales are balanced. This means that things will work out if they are meant to work out based on whatever your actions were in the past. If it comes back to you, you deserve it – either good or bad.

You must always be aware of how you do what you do. It might come back to haunt you in the long run which may not be good. At the same time, Justice demonstrates that what comes to you in the future can still be changed if you really want. However, this can only be done by a lesson learned in the current situation. You must first learn to be totally honest with yourself and others in order to move forward.

Find the Truth

If  Justice appears in your reading it is because this character’s role is to search for and find the truth, which is what you want. Once you learn to become fair and just with everyone it is only then that you will be able to distinguish dishonesty in yourself and others. This is truly the time to become objective and to base your judgment on evidence rather than what others are saying.

The Justice card also deals with the idea of karma and the law of cause and effect in all situations and with all people. It is important to remember that not everything that comes your way is a direct result of what you have done in your past. Instead, you sometimes may be called upon to deal with the consequences of the actions of someone you know or care about. This can be difficult for you to manage because you know that you didn’t cause the problem. Under such circumstances remember that it isn’t always your fault.

Adjustment

Remember that the Justice card isn’t usually about punishment, good, bad, right or wrong. It is about adjustment. “Justice” is the root word for the word “Adjustment”. The scales seen in the Justice card represent Balance, and Justice is all about ‘adjusting’ things so that they come back into balance.

The sword suggests that sometimes this won’t be pleasant. Justice pares things down with that sword so that the scales end up equal. Swords represent the mind and suggest that Justice only listens to reason, logic, and facts. She will not be tricked by appeals to emotions or passions, nor bribed for that matter. She will be rational and cool-headed.

Balanced Judgement

The message is that you must be cool-headed as well, and do what’s necessary, no matter how hard, how disagreeable, in order to gain, or re-gain equilibrium. It is not a nice card, but it is a very wise card.

The Justice card also reminds you of a time when decision-making is necessary. There is always something that is in your life that needs attention, mediation or a solution. When you consider your decision, you often wonder if you are capable of passing a judgment or are you the person who would rather accept whatever decision is made? Not only that but you wonder how can you remain as intent as hard as you can while trying to find out the truth of the matter? One must find that for this choice it is an important time to let your conscience to make the correct decision. Simple balanced judgment exists.

Justice stands as the first of the next ten cards of the Major Arcana. With it we move from the physical world (first ten cards) into the metaphysical world (next ten). There are two worlds balanced on her scales. “You’ve spent all your time in one,” she seems to be saying, time to move into the other and balance things out.”

Astrology of Justice

As you know astrology and the tarot are linked with each other. Justice is associated with the planet Venus through Libra. Venus is all about pleasurable and harmonious relationships of all kinds in our emotional attachments, marriages, friendships, and other unions (like business partnerships). Venus is content to spread happiness and tenderness, all the while teaching us how to love and appreciate others and the things that we possess. When we are linked to Venus, we beam with energy and we attract others.

Venus is associated with all things beautiful – art, music, dance, drama, literature (just to name a few). It is also linked to everything that is refined – culture, charm and grace. Venus enjoys the pleasure of luxuries – jewellery, paintings, expensive cars, good food and drink, and a beautiful home. The world that isn’t necessarily sexual, Venus loves the sensual beauty of that world too. Venus is a feminine energy and rules both Taurus and Libra.

With Libra being involved in this card, Justice is about cold, objective balance through reason or natural force. This is the card that tells the querent that excesses have consequences. Indulging in drinking and drugs will affect their health. Just as excessive exercise can damage muscles and joints and working too much can make one neglect family and friends.

Adjustments

Justice urges the querent to make adjustments, do whatever is necessary to bring things back into balance: physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually. In a more mundane sense, this card may signal a court case, legal documents, adjustments in a marriage or partnership. The outcome of all of these may not be exactly what the querent wants, but it will be what they need. It will also be scrupulously fair. When the card is reversed, it can indicate bias, obstruction of the law, or legal complications.

If the Justice card appears in a reading of yours, take note. If there are legal matters to attend to, you can be assured that the outcome will be fair and just. This includes legal contracts, i.e. marriage license or divorce decree. Or, business contract, financial arrangements or litigation. But when you are the one who is demanding justice, things look good. You should know that justice will be served and whatever lawsuits you hope to win will be won.

However, if you know that you did do something wrong and then you pretended that it was not you. If you acted in a deceptive way or have not spoken the truth when you were supposed to, there’s karma. You must realise and be very much aware of the fact that justice will still prevail. So, you will need to take responsibility for your actions.

Here’s a site where you’ll find my writings.

The Bravehearts of Belgrave High is now published. I have completed the first in a series of novels that I wrote for teens. It is the courageous story of a young girl growing up in a home filled with domestic violence. She also has to endure a school and neighbourhood full of bullies. We read how she maneuvres her way through such a difficult situation. Plus, how she grows because of it, among other themes in the novel.

The desired outcome for young readers is that they will be inspired to treasure their unique differences. If they don’t fit in with the system or with those around them, then they should realise that it’s quite okay not to fit in.

My first novel was written to help raise funds for the private foundation that I established, which might later become a charity. Click here if you’d like to be taken to the site where you can purchase this novel. If you cannot see the site, use a browser other than Chrome.
